Impact of 3D images on clear aligner treatment

Researchers recently investigated the impact of incorporating 3D crown, root and bone views generated by machine learning-driven treatment planning software into clear aligner orthodontic treatment.

They surveyed orthodontists to assess whether their treatment plans and satisfaction levels changed when presented with these additional views compared to crown-only views. The researchers sent an online questionnaire to orthodontists and presented them with videos of patients in two formats: crown-only and crown, root and bone views generated by the software.

Orthodontists were asked treatment-related questions and to rate treatment outcomes using a visual analog scale. Results showed that there were significant differences in orthodontists' responses when viewing patients in the two presentations. Approximately 33-43% of practitioners altered their treatment plan after viewing the crown, root, and bone presentations. Satisfaction ratings on a 100-point scale also changed by an average of 10.6 to 21 points, with both increases and decreases in satisfaction observed.
