Impact of insulin resistance on women’s health

Investigators may have uncovered significant associations between insulin resistance and 31 diseases and all-cause mortality in women. The findings were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes 2024 Annual Meeting.

In the study, investigators used UK Biobank data to better understand the effects of insulin resistance on overall health in a population of over 500,000 participants aged 40 to 69 years.

After a follow-up of 13 years, the investigators identified 26 positive correlations and five negative correlations between insulin resistance and diseases. Insulin resistance was found to be linked to gout, disorders of lipoprotein metabolism, Parkinson’s disease and sciatica.

Despite the findings, additional studies are needed to further analyze the mechanisms behind insulin resistance and the observed associations with diseases beyond its known effects on diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
