Impact of virtual tour on dental practice management skills
An online gamified virtual tour could be effective at enhancing dental practice management skills among students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
An online gamified virtual tour — a technology-enhanced learning approach designed for teaching and learning— involves an 360-degree, interactive, asynchronous learning situation in which students can attend a virtual simulation of a dental setting and practice their dental practice management skills in a safe learning environment.
In a study published in Scientific Reports, researchers examined the educational benefit of an online gamified virtual dental clinic among 20 dental undergraduates and 20 orthodontic residents. The participants were assigned to complete pre- and postknowledge assessments. A self-administered questionnaire further evaluated user perceptions of the virtual tour.
The researchers found that the online gamified virtual dental clinic was effective at improving assessment scores. Although the preknowledge assessment scores were higher among the orthodontic residents compared with the dental undergraduates, there were no statistically significant differences in the postknowledge assessment scores between the two groups. Perceptions of the virtual tour were reported to be positive — demonstrating the program’s usefulness, ease of use and enjoyment.
The findings showed that the online gamified virtual tour helped advance knowledge acquisition and dental practice management skills among undergraduate and postgraduate students.
