Improving dental care in rural communities
The University of Vermont Medical Center has partnered with the federally qualified health center Hudson Headwaters Health Network to expand the institution’s dental residency program and encourage more dentists to practice in northern New York.
Often, residents of rural communities face challenges in accessing dental care, according to an article published in the Glens Falls Business Journal. However, the partnership hopes to improve access to high-quality preventive dental care among patients residing in rural communities. Students who participate in the program will have an opportunity to learn comprehensive dental procedures — including complex or emergency surgery and routine dentistry — provide dental care to rural patients and have a positive impact on the community.
“We’re excited to expand and be able to offer our residents more experiences providing dental care and services,” concluded Justin Hurlburt, D.M.D., program director of the dental residency program at the UVM Medical Center.
