Improving endodontic outcomes with advanced imaging, navigation systems

Investigators have uncovered whether guided endodontics could increase the success rate of endodontic treatment.

Although traditional endodontic techniques have been shown to be effective, they may have limitations in addressing complex root canal anatomies and calcification. Guided endodontics involves computer-aided planning and static or dynamic navigation to access root canals.

In a study published in Cureus, the investigators conducted an umbrella review of the PubMed, Scopus, EBSCOhost and Cochrane databases to identify randomized clinical trials, case series and case reports focused on the effects of guided endodontics — with the goal of determining whether this approach could impact the success of endodontic treatment.

Compared with conventional endodontic procedures, the investigators discovered that guided endodontics provided greater precision and endodontic outcomes, particularly in complex cases.

The investigators emphasized that further clinical trials may be needed to better understand the benefits and potential costs of guided endodontics.
