Improving liver health with lifestyle choices
Certain diets and weight loss could reduce disease symptoms and progression in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
In a comprehensive review published in U.S. News & World Report, investigators reviewed dietary interventions for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
The investigators determined that plant-based, fiber-rich diets such as the Mediterranean diet helped reduce the risk of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure. Anti-inflammatory foods, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, lean proteins, omega-3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats were among the foods included in diets that benefited liver health. Further, a 7% drop in body weight was effective at decreasing liver fat.
