Investigating oral-rheumatic link

...

A recent study explored the potential relationship between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

In the analysis, published in Medicine, investigators used genome-wide association study data to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with rheumatoid arthritis among more than 22,000 participants with and without rheumatoid arthritis and assess whether these genetic variations were connected with periodontitis among a separate group of more than 200,000 participants.

The investigators found that the participants who were genetically susceptible to rheumatoid arthritis had a modest lower risk of developing periodontitis compared with those who did not have rheumatoid arthritis. They added that the association was statistically significant.

The findings indicated that genetic rheumatoid arthritis liability could hold an inverse correlation with periodontitis; however, further studies are needed to determine the underlying mechanisms of the relationship.
