IRS makes Direct File option permanent

The IRS announced it will make Direct File a permanent option for filing federal tax returns, starting in the 2025 tax season.

The decision comes after the agency deployed a limited pilot program during the 2024 filing season, where 140,803 taxpayers in 12 states filed their taxes using Direct File. After analyzing data collected during the pilot, holding numerous meetings with stakeholders and gathering feedback from users, the IRS determined the program was "highly successful."

Additional details on the 2025 expansion, including how more taxpayers will become eligible for Direct File, will be revealed in the coming months, according to the IRS.
