Kentucky school offers state's first dental apprenticeship
All city schools in Paris, Kentucky, have various partnerships with local business in an effort to give high school students real-life job experiences. One such business is a local dentist who is offering a student the opportunity to be a dental assistant.
Amanda Mccauley-Thornberry, D.M.D, said once the student finishes the apprenticeship, she'll have about 2,000 hours of dental assistance training under her belt and will receive a certificate.
This is the first dental apprenticeship in Kentucky, according to WKYT. Dr. Thornberry said the program is very beneficial for students.
“It’s hard to say at 16, 'I want to be a dentist' or 'I want to be a dental hygienist,' so I think this has been really eye-opening for her and would be great for other organizations to do as well. To see if that’s what I want to do or don’t,” she said.
