Lawmakers mull solutions to dentist shortage
Lawmakers in New York are weighing several bills to address the growing statewide shortage of access to dental care.
Many dentists are retiring or closing, and new dentists are leaving the state after graduation, which makes it difficult for low-income, elderly or disabled people to receive oral health care.
Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner sponsors six bills within a legislative package aimed to improve New Yorkers’ dental health, including requiring insurance plans to give dental providers a yearly schedule of reimbursement rates for services, create a workforce employment program for dental professionals and exempt sales taxes on oral hygiene products.
