Link between alcohol, dementia

...

Alcohol consumption could contribute to the risk of dementia.

In a study published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, investigators examined the drinking habits and neurologic outcomes of more than 500,000 participants aged 56 to 72 years at baseline.

After a follow-up of 4 to 12 years, the investigators determined that individuals who reported heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder had a higher risk of developing dementia compared with those who reported light drinking or no alcohol consumption.

The findings suggested that public health strategies aimed at minimizing alcohol use disorder could help curb the rate of dementia cases.
