Link between carbonated water, weight loss

...

Researchers may have uncovered the mechanism through which carbonated water affects weight loss.

In a study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, the researchers examined the data from a 2004 study focused on the mechanisms of hemodialysis-induced hypoglycemia.

The researchers discovered that the carbon dioxide in carbonated water entered the bloodstream through the stomach lining and was converted to bicarbonate by carbonic anhydrase in red blood cells. The process increased intracellular pH values, thereby stimulating anerobic glycolysis and higher glucose metabolism.

Although the findings suggested that consumption of carbonated water could indirectly promote weight loss, the researchers cautioned that its influence on weight loss was minimal and that carbonated water can adversely impact the gastrointestinal system.
