Maintaining good oral health during pregnancy
Experts detailed how pregnancy can affect oral health and what steps can be taken to protect their teeth and gums.
During pregnancy, individuals are often more susceptible to oral health issues such as tooth pain and bleeding gums as a result of hormonal and dietary changes, according to a report from Verywell Health. Moreover, neglecting oral hygiene during pregnancy can lead to infections that can increase the risk of preeclampsia, preterm birth and low birth weight.
The experts emphasized that those who experience swollen, red and bleeding gums should visit their dentist to assess whether they have gingivitis. Although certain procedures need to be discussed with a dentist, delaying treatment could result in more complex oral health issues. The ADA and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists indicated that preventative, diagnostic, restorative and emergency dental treatment may be performed in pregnant patients. Pregnant patients were advised to inform their dentists how many weeks they are into their pregnancy.
To mitigate the risk of oral health issues during pregnancy, the experts recommended that people brush and floss regularly, eat fruits and vegetables, drink water after consuming sugary foods and beverages and use a soft-bristled toothbrush on sensitive gums. Those who vomit should immediately rinse the mouth with water or a mixture of warm water and baking soda to minimize the erosive effects of the stomach acids on the tooth enamel. Saltwater rinses or ice water can also help with tooth pain and gum inflammation.
Clinicians were advised to visit ADA.org and acog.org for more comprehensive guidelines on managing oral health in pregnant patients.
