Majority of patients with dementia have trouble sleeping
In a comprehensive review published in Aging, researchers examined research on the relationship between dementia, sleep disorders and comorbidities.
They discovered that up to 70% of research participants with dementia experienced sleep disturbances and a large majority of them presented with comorbidities. Underlying medical conditions that can impact dementia included cardiovascular disease, thyroid disorders and diabetes. For instance, 25% to 41% of stroke survivors and about 22% of those with Type 2 diabetes developed dementia.
Additionally, mental health issues such as depression and anxiety as well as sleep disorders like insomnia were found to be prevalent among patients with dementia.
The investigators emphasized the critical need to identify targeted interventions to manage comorbidities and implement evidence-based practices in this patient population.
