Managing financial uncertainty during holidays
As the holiday shopping season gets underway, many shoppers may be experiencing financial stress.
In an audio interview with NPR, experts offered strategies for those feeling uncertain about their holiday spending. They noted that economic insecurity combined with an uptick in layoffs has taken a toll on the Consumer Confidence Index — a predictor of future spending and saving.
The experts suggested that trimming the list of people to buy gifts for or skipping this year’s gift giving altogether could help those feeling the most financial strain save for 2026. For those who plan to purchase gifts for the holidays, determining nondiscretionary expenses can establish a spending limit. Having this limit might relieve some of the stress centered around holiday shopping.
Further, individuals can discuss their spending limits and their wish to avoid large purchases with family members and even children in order to set expectations early. After the holidays, the experts emphasized that individuals can reset and find ways to save money to get back to a comfortable spending situation.
