Markers of inflammation uncovered after prolonged fasting

Water-only fasting could raise inflammation and the risk of cardiovascular issues.

In a study published in Molecular Metabolism, researchers assigned 20 healthy adults to follow a regimen of water-only fasting for 10 days and a subsequent five days of guided refeeding.

The researchers found elevated inflammatory markers; enhanced platelet activation; higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels; increased liver enzyme levels as well as lower glucose levels after the participants’ fasted for 10 days. However, some of the inflammatory markers and metabolic values normalized following refeeding.
