Mediterranean diet could lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis
A metabolic signature could explain the relationship between Mediterranean diet adherence and the reduced incidence of rheumatoid arthritis.
In a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, investigators used UK Biobank data to examine the associations between the Mediterranean diet score, a metabolic signature containing 66 metabolites, genetic susceptibility and rheumatoid arthritis among more than 109,000 participants.
The investigators discovered that the Mediterranean diet score and metabolic signature were both inversely and independently related to a reduced risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Further, individuals with favorable metabolic profiles may be able to minimize their genetic susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis. The 66-metabolite signature was found to explain nearly one-fourth of the correlation between the Mediterranean diet and rheumatoid arthritis.
The investigators hope their findings can lead to more personalized interventions aimed at attenuating the risk of rheumatoid arthritis.
