Minnesota Dental Association spearheads legislation to fund dental academic programs

The Minnesota Dental Association, alongside the Minnesota Educators of Dental Assisting and Minnesota Dental Hygiene Educators Association, has proposed legislation to provide state funds to dental academic institutions to enhance dental assisting and hygiene education programs.

State senate and house bills propose a $20 million grant appropriation, intending to empower institutions to address workforce shortages and expand program capacity. The legislation targets community colleges, technical schools and universities offering dental hygiene and dental assisting programs.

With a significant shortage of dental assistants and hygienists in Minnesota, this investment aims to alleviate recruitment challenges and improve access to dental care. The grants can be used for various purposes, such as infrastructure development, scholarships, faculty hiring and other program-specific needs, ultimately benefiting students, patients and the dental profession.
