Missouri Medicaid expands access to routine dental examinations

In an effort to boost preventive dental care, Missouri’s Medicaid will now cover routine dental examinations among adult patients.

According to The Beacon reporters, Missouri’s Medicaid plan previously included only dental cleanings. Beginning on July 1, the expanded coverage plan is expected to encourage more adults to follow through with their dental appointments and improve their overall health.

Although Missouri was among the states with the lowest access to dental care because of high out-of-pocket costs — even for those with dental insurance — the state now leads the way for other states with disparities in dental care.

Missouri legislators hope the increase from 30% to 80% in the rate of reimbursements it pays to Medicaid providers may also inspire more dentists to participate in treating a higher number of patients with Medicaid benefits.
