More Americans using marijuana than drinking alcohol every day
More Americans are reporting regular use of marijuana, according to an analysis authored by Carnegie Mellon University drug policy researcher Jonathan P. Caulkins, Ph.D.
Dr. Caulkins looked at data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and found that 2022 was the first time more people reported using cannabis daily or near daily than alcohol.
In 2022, about 17.7 million people reported using marijuana daily or near daily compared with 14.7 million who reported drinking daily or near daily, according to the analysis.
While more people drink alcohol than use marijuana overall, high-frequency drinking was less common, the study showed.
Season 4, Episode 3 of the ADA Dental Sound Bites podcast, "Patients Using Cannabis: A Dentist's Guide," explores the impact of marijuana use on oral health and its implications when treating patients.
