More cinnamon products may be contaminated with lead

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it has included additional products in its health alert for ground cinnamon products containing lead at elevated levels, which may be unsafe for consumers.

Among the new products listed were brands such as Compania Indillor Orientale, ALB Flavor, Shahzada, Spice Class and La Frontera — which the FDA found to have lead concentrations between 2.03 and 7.01 parts per million. The agency urged the firms involved to voluntarily recall the products.

The FDA will continue to sample ground cinnamon at retail locations for elevated levels of lead. In the meantime, the agency advised consumers to throw away, avoid eating and not purchase these ground cinnamon products.
