Multistate E. coli outbreak linked to walnuts
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a food safety alert warning of an E. coli outbreak linked to organic bulk walnuts in 19 states.
The recalled product, Gibson Farms, Inc. organic walnut halves and pieces, was sold in bulk bins with expiration dates between May 21, 2025, and June 7, 2025. It has led to 12 illnesses and seven hospitalizations so far. Almost all sick people purchased the organic walnuts from bulk bins in food co-ops or natural food stores in California or Washington, according to the CDC.
Those who bought organic walnut halves from bulk containers are encouraged to check pantries, refrigerators and freezers to see if they might be part of the recall. If you’re unable to tell whether your walnuts are part of the recall, the CDC advises, it’s safer not to eat them.
