Nebraska third graders' dental health improving

Third graders in Nebraska have less dental decay than the national average, according to the latest Nebraska Oral Health Survey of Young Children.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services’ 2021-22 survey showed that dental decay in Nebraska third graders is down from 64% to 58%, which NDHHS said is more than the national average of 60%.

The improvement can be attributed to several factors, including health workers who visit childcare centers and elementary schools to provide preventive care such as topical fluoride and dental sealants. NDHHS has also developed the Nebraska Early Dental Health Starter Kit Campaign, which has distributed more than 50,000 hygiene kits across the state.
