New approach could improve psoriasis, weight loss in patients with overweight, obesity

Researchers examined the safety and efficacy of a combination therapy in patients with psoriasis and overweight or obesity.

In a Phase 3b clinical trial published in JAMA Dermatology, the researchers randomly assigned nearly 275 adult patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and overweight or obesity to receive either ixekizumab (an interleukin 17A inhibitor) plus tirzepatide (a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist) or ixekizumab alone.

The researchers found that the participants in the combination therapy group had greater improvements in psoriasis severity, complete skin clearance and weight reduction compared with those in the monotherapy group. The adverse effects reported in the study matched the known safety profile of the treatments; however, adverse gastrointestinal effects were more prevalent among the patients who received ixekizumab plus tirzepatide compared with those who received ixekizumab alone.

The researchers emphasized that the combination therapy could help enhance care in this patient population.
