New Buffalo honored for water fluoridation efforts

New Buffalo has been named among seven Michigan community water systems that received the 2023 Community Water Fluoridation 50 Year Award, according to a report from ABC 57 News.

As a result of the continuous delivery of fluoridated water to the community, up to 90% of New Buffalo residents may have access to drinking water that reduces the prevalence of tooth decay.

“These awards demonstrate the commitment to high quality water determined by [the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]. Water fluoridation has proven its effectiveness in preventing tooth decay throughout one’s lifetime and keeping Michigan residents healthy,” concluded Elizabeth Hertel, director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
