New framework aims to improve diagnosis, management of obesity

The European Association for the Study of Obesity proposed a comprehensive framework for managing obesity in adult patients, according to a study published in Nature Medicine.

The framework was designed to improve the diagnosis, staging and treatment of obesity. Investigators — including 21 specialists in endocrinology, nutrition and internal medicine; five bariatric surgeons; two primary care physicians and one patient advocacy expert — followed a consensus process involving multiple rounds of voting on initial statements prepared by the European Association for the Study of Obesity steering committee.

The investigators redefined obesity as an adiposity-based chronic disease and advised a shift away from the traditional reliance on body mass index. They also devised 28 statements regarding clinical diagnosis, staging, ethnicity-specific cut-offs and body composition, functional status, psychological health, behavioral modifications and metabolic and bariatric procedures.
