New guide released to improve care for patients with developmental disabilities

An alliance of advocates, doctor groups and other health care leaders released a plan to transform the experiences of people with developmental disabilities.

The new National Roadmap for Disability-Inclusive Healthcare is designed to better prepare doctors, nurses and dentists to treat those with disabilities. The plan outlines steps for educational associations, regulatory and accrediting bodies and professional organizations, and states that regulatory bodies should require learning about intellectual and developmental disabilities as part of licensing renewals and board certifications.

The story states that officials from the American Medical Association and the ADA agreed in 2022 to work toward expanding disability training for medical and dental students.
