New obesity management strategy may lower body weight

Treatment with a novel drug may be effective in promoting weight loss in adults with obesity.

In a Phase 2 trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers randomly assigned more than 700 adult participants with a body mass index of 30 or greater who did not have diabetes or with a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one nondiabetes comorbidity to receive either up to 3.6 or 6 milligrams of the investigational glucagon receptor-glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor dual agonist survodutide or placebo subcutaneously administered once per week.

The researchers found that the change in body weight from baseline and a weight reduction of at least 5% were both comparable among the survodutide groups but significantly greater than those measured among the placebo group. However, the participants who received either dosage of survodutide were more likely to experience adverse gastrointestinal effects compared with those who received placebo.
