NFL game commercials promote unhealthy food

Following Super Bowl LIX, investigators have examined the nutritional content of foods advertised during televised National Football League games.
In a cross-sectional study published in JAMA Network Open, the investigators analyzed more than 100 food-related commercials that aired during 10 NFL games between September and November 2023.
The investigators found that food products advertised during NFL games exceeded the recommended daily intake of sodium for healthy adults. Quick-service restaurant meals had the highest levels of sodium, carbohydrates and calories compared with store-bought foods.
The investigators emphasized that adult patients with diabetes, kidney failure or cardiovascular conditions such as coronary artery disease and heart failure may face health risks when deviating from their prescribed dietary restrictions. Clinicians were urged to advise their patients with chronic conditions to limit the intake of foods advertised during NFL games.
