Nicotine vaping in youths reveals concerning habits

...

A study explored trends in vaping nicotine among youths.

In the study, published in JAMA Network Open, investigators analyzed the habits and outcomes of more than 115,000 U.S. youths in grades 8, 10 and 12 between 2020 and 2024.

During the survey period, the overall reporting of nicotine vaping over the previous 30 days declined. However, among those who reported nicotine vaping, daily vaping increased from about 15% in 2020 to 29% in 2024. In addition, this group reported an increase in failed attempts at quitting, from 28% in 2020 to 53% in 2024.

The findings demonstrated the rising prevalence of nicotine dependence among youths who vape nicotine. The investigators highlighted a critical need for clinicians to be aware of challenges regarding the treatment and prevention of nicotine dependence in U.S. youths.
