Obesity prevalence among US adults

The prevalence of obesity in adults continues to be high.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 23 states may have an adult obesity prevalence rate of 35% compared with no states prior to 2013. Further, obesity prevalence may vary depending on race and ethnicity. For instance, white adults, American Indian or Alaska Native adults, Hispanic adults and Black adults had an obesity prevalence of 35% or higher in 16, 30, 34 and 38 states, respectively.

The findings indicated a critical need for obesity prevention starting at a young age. In addition, understanding the multiple factors that can contribute to obesity — including genetics, medications, poor sleep, the gut microbiome, stress and lifestyle— can help health care providers identify new treatment strategies. The CDC concluded that improving access to health care, healthful foods and safe places for physical activity may effectively foster healthier communities.
