Olive oil consumption may equal less weight gain

The long-term consumption of olive oil could help mitigate weight gain.

In a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, investigators examined the outcomes of three major prospective cohort studies involving more than 121,000 participants.

After a follow-up period of 20 to 24 years, the investigators found that olive oil intake was inversely associated with long-term body weight changes among middle-aged adults. For instance, each additional half tablespoon of olive oil per day resulted in less weight gain. However, the heightened consumption of vegetable fats, butter, margarine and refined grains was linked to increased body weight.

The investigators hypothesized that olive oil could increase total energy expenditure and elevate feelings of satiety, thereby contributing to less weight gain.
