Onions may be to blame for E. coli outbreak at McDonald’s
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have uncovered the potential source of the E. coli outbreak among McDonald’s Quarter Pounders as an additional 15 cases above the 75 reported earlier in November are identified.
The agencies found that fresh slivered onions from Taylor Farms may be responsible for the spread of the bacteria. They stated that a total of 90 cases of E. coli infections and 27 related hospitalizations have been reported across more than 13 states.
The CDC noted that individuals with severe symptoms should visit their health providers immediately. Despite the infection rate, the agency indicated that the current risk of developing an E. coli infection following consumption of McDonald’s Quarter Pounders may be low since the onions were recalled. The onions were also unlikely to have been sold directly to consumers at grocery stores.
