Opinion: Legislation could allocate more patient dollars to patient care

...

Lisa Bosch, D.M.D., a dentist practicing in Missouri, revealed how a new pair of bills could usher in dental insurance reform and benefit patients.

In an opinion piece from The Kansas City Star, Dr. Bosch stressed that dental insurance providers in Missouri are currently permitted to spend large proportions of patient premiums on expenses or profits other than patient care, resulting in partial coverage, delays in dental care and claim denials.

She detailed that if H.B. 2471 and S.B. 1596 are passed, a dental loss ratio will require insurance providers in Missouri to spend at least 85% of dental premiums on patient care. Dr. Bosch argued that the change could protect the dentist-patient relationship, limit dental care interference from insurance providers and return clinical decision-making to dental professionals.

“Missourians deserve dental coverage that works as expected. I encourage lawmakers to support H.B. 2471 and S.B. 1596,” concluded Dr. Bosch.
