Oral cancer drug repurposed to treat diabetes
Researchers have repurposed a cancer drug, a focal adhesion kinase inhibitor, to treat diabetes by converting acinar cells into insulin-producing cells. A study in animal models — diabetic mice and a nonhuman primate — showed improved blood glucose regulation after a three-week course of the drug. Promising long-term benefits were observed, suggesting potential as a new diabetes treatment approach.
