Oral health videos: Dental professionals offer authoritative content
Investigators have evaluated whether videos posted to YouTube can effectively communicate oral hygiene information.
In a cross-sectional study published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene, the investigators examined the quality, reliability and viewer engagement metrics of 100 YouTube videos communicating oral health-related information between 2020 and 2025.
The investigators found that most of the oral health-related videos posted on YouTube were of moderate to excellent quality. Those posted by dental professionals had a higher quality and reliability of information compared with those posted by other health professionals or individuals without medical backgrounds. Despite having poorer subscriber counts, the videos posted by dental professionals also exhibited greater levels of engagement.
The findings indicated that greater high-quality and reliable oral health communication through platforms such as YouTube can help support better public hygiene education.
