Orthodontic treatment could prevent middle ear inflammation
A new multidisciplinary intervention could help prevent and manage otitis media with effusion.
In a systematic review published in the European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry, investigators used the PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases to identify five prospective, observational studies focused on the efficacy of orthodontic and craniofacial orthopedic interventions. The studies included 150 patients aged 4.5 to 18 years with chronic otitis media with effusion who received one of the following: preventive treatments such as rapid maxillary expansion, alternative treatments or no treatment.
The investigators found that the patients who received rapid maxillary expansion experienced improved Eustachian tube function and audiometric parameters — including reduced airbone gaps, increased nasal fossae width, and recovery of auditory function and tympanic membrane elasticity. The outcomes with rapid maxillary expansion were comparable to those achieved with surgical techniques like ventilation tube placement.
The findings suggested that rapid maxillary expansion may complement otolaryngologic strategies to both prevent and manage the incidence of otitis media with effusion — representing a collaborative approach in the improvement of middle ear health.
