Over 1 in 3 people affected by neurological conditions

A new study in The Lancet Neurology found more than 3 billion people worldwide were living with a neurological condition in 2021.

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, neurological conditions are now the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. More than 80% of neurological deaths and health loss occur in low- and middle-income countries. The available neurological workforce is unevenly distributed across the world, with high-income countries having 70 times more neurological professionals per 100,000 individuals in the population compared with low- and middle-income countries.

Some of the top 10 neurological conditions contributing to health loss in 2021 were stroke, neonatal encephalopathy, migraine and dementia.
