Participation in cardiac rehabilitation could differ in women vs. men
Cardiac rehabilitation rates could be lower among female patients.
In a scientific statement from the American Heart Association published in Circulation, investigators used data from observational studies, randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses to compare the cardiac rehabilitation rates and outcomes among male and female patients.
The investigators found that despite comparable survival benefits among male and female patients who completed the cardiac rehabilitation programs, enrollment in the programs was lower among eligible female patients compared with their male counterparts — particularly among non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic and Asian female patients.
The findings highlighted the persistent barriers to care that female patients may face. As a result, the investigators suggested strategies such as automatic referral systems and hybrid and home-based care options to improve participation rates.
