Partnership offers dental assisting apprenticeship program

The Santa Cruz County Office of Education announced that it has partnered with the nonprofit Dientes to launch a dental assisting apprenticeship program to help students become registered dental assistants.

The accelerated dental assisting apprenticeship program will involve daily instruction and will provide students with an opportunity to participate in a paid internship without the fees typical of a dental assisting program, according to a report from TPG Online Daily. After five weeks of the program, the students will take positions in dental officers four days per week and continue to attend classes one day per week.

In its inaugural class, eight students have been enrolled. Between the start of the internship and registration as a dental assistant, students will see their pay increase from about $18.50 to up to $27 per hour.

Leaders of the program hope it will help students become employed as dental assistants in California’s tri-county area — which incorporates San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County and Ventura County, where dental assistants are in high demand.
