Periodontal disease may be linked to changes in gut microbiome
Researchers may have uncovered a connection between periodontal inflammation and shifts in gut bacteria.
In a study published in Microorganisms, the researchers used clinical assessments and advanced sequencing techniques to examine the periodontal health and gut microbial composition of 36 older patients with no history of gastrointestinal issues.
The researchers discovered significant differences in the bacterial species present in those with high and low levels of periodontal inflammation. For instance, those with heightened levels of periodontal inflammation were more likely to have signs of gut dysbiosis.
The findings provided insights into the broader implications of oral bacteria on gastrointestinal issues and systemic health.
