Periodontitis implicated in migraine
The potential systemic effects of periodontitis could point to associations with the pathology of migraine.
In a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the European Journal of Neurology, investigators used the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Embase databases to identify studies focused on the relationship between periodontitis and migraine.
The link between the two conditions was found to be statistically significant. For instance, those with periodontitis were about 80% more likely to experience migraine. The investigators noted heightened risks among those with a history of smoking, higher stress levels and comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes and hormonal disorders.
The results of the study highlighted the role of periodontal interventions to prevent migraine in this patient population.
