Physicians should monitor patients’ oral health
Endocrinologists and other specialists, as well as primary care physicians, should talk to their diabetic patients about their dental and oral health, said Robert Gabbay, M.D., Ph.D., chief scientific and medical officer of the American Diabetes Association.
"One of the most important things to ask people with diabetes is when their last dental visit was and if they have a follow-up," he said.
Dental disease and poor oral hygiene are associated with an increased risk for heart failure among people with diabetes, and periodontitis may exacerbate the progression of chronic kidney disease, a disorder that affects 1 in 3 people with diabetes.
