Potential benefits, risks of methylated multivitamins
Although one-third of U.S. adults take multivitamins, some of them may not be able to fully absorb the nutrients from the vitamins, according to a news report from Discover Magazine. Experts cited in the article noted that methylated multivitamins comprise methyl groups that make them more readily digestible, allowing the body to utilize the nutrients more efficiently. Patients with gastrointestinal issues causing malabsorption and older individuals may be among those most likely to benefit from taking methylated multivitamins over regular vitamins.
Some methylated multivitamins have also been shown to improve mood, cognitive function support, fatigue, homocysteine levels in the blood — the last of which has been linked to cardiovascular disease. However, the experts warned of potential adverse effects associated with vitamins, including anxiety, agitation, irritability, headaches, nausea, neuropathy, insomnia and achiness. Further, these types of vitamins may be contraindicated in patients receiving certain types of medications or those with health conditions like seizures, liver issues, bipolar disorder or pernicious anemia. Therefore, individuals considering methylated multivitamins should speak with their health care providers before initiating their use.
