In a study published in JAMA, researchers randomly assigned 200 patients with persistent atrial fibrillation who were scheduled to undergo treatment with electrical cardioversion to either consume at least one cup of caffeinated coffee per day or abstain from caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee as well as other caffeine products for a period of six months.

Compared with those in the coffee abstinence group, the participants in the coffee consumption group were less likely to experience recurrent atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. The findings suggested that coffee consumption could benefit this patient population.
