Preventing dementia with blood pressure control

...

A strategy to reduce blood pressure among patients with hypertension could be effective at mitigating the risk of all-cause dementia.

In a study published in Nature Medicine, researchers randomly assigned less than 34,000 participants aged 40 years and older to undergo a blood pressure-reducing intervention or usual care.

After a follow-up of four years, the researchers found that the participants in the intervention group had a lower risk of all-cause dementia and cognitive impairment without dementia compared with those in the usual care group. In addition, a larger proportion of those in the intervention group achieved their target blood pressure.

The findings highlighted the potential for blood pressure-reducing interventions to be used as preventive options for dementia.
