Protective effects of exercise during leisure time

...

Increasing leisure-time physical activity could help minimize the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

In a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, investigators examined the physical activity habits and health outcomes of less than 6,000 participants aged 30 to 60 years.

The investigators discovered that the participants who partook in moderate to vigorous physical activity during leisure time had a lower likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes compared with those who partook in light physical activity during leisure time. Despite the benefits of leisure-time physical activity observed in the study, occupational physical activity did not appear to provide the same benefits.

The findings could encourage modifications to current World Health Organization guidelines lacking differentiation between occupational and leisure-time physical activity.
