Quieter exercise may preserve physical exertion, hearing

Researchers examined whether individuals exposed to lower volumes of music would still perceive higher levels of exercise intensity while protecting individuals against noise-induced hearing loss.

In a study published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, the researchers assessed perceived exertion among nearly 200 participants who attended fitness classes with either higher volumes of music or music reductions in A-weighted decibels of three or more (mean sound levels equaled 91.4 versus 88.5 A-weighted decibels). The participants subsequently completed surveys.

The researchers found that the differences in perceived exercise exertion between the two music volumes were noninferior up to an A-weighted decibel reduction of four. However, only a small proportion of the participants wore hearing protection, indicating an increased need for education regarding preventive measures in noisy environments.

The findings could provide evidence of the preservation of perceived exercise intensity at lower music volumes, allowing for the more widespread adoption of safer acoustic practices in fitness settings.
