Raising awareness about rampant tooth decay
Nearly one in five kindergartners have untreated tooth decay, the highest level in years, according to recent data from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services,
Officials say the rise was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a lack of access to care.
In the Charlotte area, the rate of untreated decay is 16.6%.
However, department officials said a recent Medicaid expansion is helping to expand access.
The department is commemorating February’s National Children's Dental Health Month.
