Reducing blood pressure with vitamin D3 supplementation

Vitamin D3 supplementation may be effective at decreasing blood pressure.

In a study published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, researchers randomly assigned 257 patients aged 65 years and older with a body mass index of greater than 25 to receive low- or high-dose vitamin D3 supplementation in combination with calcium citrate. They noted that 221 of the patients completed the trial.

Compared with those who received low-dose vitamin D3 supplementation, the patients who received high-dose supplementation experienced greater mean reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Those with a BMI higher than 30 experienced significant systolic blood pressure reductions regardless of vitamin D3 dosage, whereas only those in the high-dose group experienced significant reductions in diastolic blood pressure.
